Background (education, what career did you have before this?)

My background was in architecture and the built environment. I did a degree in architecture in Manchester University and worked as a building surveyor for the past 2 years before joining the course.

What attracted you to a career change into web development?

I was always interested in technology, particularly computing and internet. I had the thought that working in computing meant that I would need a very strong maths background or otherwise working in an IT support field which did was not attractive to me as someone with ambitions to work more creatively.

Why are you attending the Coding Fellowship?

I wanted a strong foundation in coding without having to invest 3 years into a university degree, the material for which may or may not be relevant by the time I graduate. Doing a bootcamp made sense as we learn the most up-to-date technologies at the time.

What was your coding experience before starting the bootcamp?

Some IT lessons in college with basic computer logic and HTML. Working with a CMS to make a portfolio site in the past.

How have you found the Fellowship so far?

The Fellowship has been challenging and fast paced, which makes learning a lot more dynamic and engaging.

What have you enjoyed most?

Learning about new tools and technologies for making development more streamlined and efficient. Also solving issues and coding problems feels very rewarding.

What have you found hardest?

Some programming concepts were tough to wrap my mind around as it forced me to think in a completely different way that I was used to. Also, debugging can be very frustrating but ultimately there is a great sense of accomplishment when you fix the issues.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of attending the Fellowship?

Find a way to process and organise the wealth of given information that makes sense to you, as the learning curve will vary for different people. Also keep a good cheat-sheet as you will be referring back to it throughout the course!
